- The Syrian artist will put out a new full-length on Diplo's label in June.
Omar Souleyman will release his next album, To Syria With Love, on Mad Decent June 2nd.
The new LP, which follows releases for Domino, Monkeytown Records and The Trilogy Tapes, emphasizes the "more elaborate keyboard and techno elements" of Souleyman's music, with dabke and baladi styles featuring throughout. Souleyman says, "It's been six years I've been away, and I'm tired of looking for home and asking about my loved ones. My soul is wounded and it's like having dust in my eyes." Souleyman moved to Turkey from Syria in 2013, but looks back to his embattled homeland for the new record, his first for Diplo's Mad Decent. The label says To Syria With Love sets politics aside, emphasizing "his emotional connection to the land and people but not without heartache in view of the nation's current state."
After getting his start as a wedding singer and releasing over 500 live albums in Syria, Souleyman found a wider audience via the deep-digging world music label Sublime Frequencies. He's since collaborated with Björk and Four Tet and toured the world many times over, even playing the Nobel Peace Prize Concert in Norway in 2013.
