Dutch company Tasty Chips Electronics is launching a Kickstarter campaign to build a new hardware granular synthesiser.
Granular synthesis is a form of sound processing that zooms into the microscopic level of sound, dividing samples into small pieces called grains. It's generally found in software form, such as Ableton's Max For Live Granulator, making the announcement of the Tasty Chips Electronics GR-1 of particular interest.
In approximately three weeks, the company will seek funding on Kickstarter to aid construction of the hardware granular synthesiser, which will handle 16-voice polyphony with 128 grains per voice and process audio in 32 bit/44.1kHz fidelity. Users can control density and pan spray, tune and scan through the samples and shape the sound with two LFOs and an ADSR envelope. CV and gate options will allow it to connect to Eurorack modular synthesisers, while up to 4GB of user samples can be stored onboard.
Despite launching the Kickstarter campaign, Tasty Chips say the synth will be released regardless. The first batch is expected to arrive in November with a full release hoped for late 2017 or early 2018.
