- The LP is out January 20th on Nyege Nyege Tapes.
Rian Treanor and electro acholi pioneer Ocen James have a new album coming on Nyege Nyege Tapes early next year.
Out January 20th, Saccades is the result of collaborative sessions that took place during Treanor's month-long residency at the Nyege Nyege studios in Kampala in 2018. The improvisational LP attempts to emulate the reactiveness of a live performance, combining Treanor's computer-controlled rhythms with James's expressionistic fiddle playing. It also includes a remix from Vienna noise collective Farmers Manual.
Regular collaborators Treanor and James toured together earlier this year, performing at No Bounds Festival, Cafe OTO and Manchester's The White Hotel. They hosted a joint show on NTS Radio in October. Treanor's acclaimed 2020 LP, File Under UK Metaplasm, is also partly inspired by his time in Uganda playing alongside James.
A member of the Nyege Nyege collective, James is part of a group of artists who make electro acholi (AKA acholitronix), a modern reinterpretation of traditional acholi music from the Luo region of northern Uganda. For more on the genre, revisit this deep dive from 2017.
