- Anthony Naples became one of last year's biggest breakthroughs in part because of his inviting deep house sound: warm and scuffed like a well-worn livingroom. But some recent work, including a blistering turn on Opal Tapes' Cold Holiday compilation, suggest a darker side to the NYC resident. Moscato, the double headed follow-up to last year's Mad Disrespect on Mister Saturday Night, gives us satisfying peeks at both faces of Naples' coin.
The first side is the producer we know from "Mad Disrespect" and "Ill Still," with a weary organ warbling over hi-hats that kick up a dust storm. But even with its insistent catchiness and cheeky vocal sample, there's something sinister underneath. The song's bassline is a grizzled machine moan, and the chords are monotonous walls, hinting at a more techno-influenced realm that the B-side fully inhabits, ratcheting up the tempo to 131 BPM. There's no cheery keyboard sample this time, just pure torque and buzz. It's a rather austere counterpart to his deep house work, but as it turns out, "severe" is a look that works just as well on him.
