  • 2003 has been a phenomenal year for Steve Lawler. His We Love Sundays at Space residency gained him much applause and his Lights Out Volume 2 received critical acclaim. His hosting of monthly Harlem nights at The End has also gained him a strong following. Bringing in the equally talented producer/DJ/remixer Oscar G (one half of the Murk boys), Steve’s Harlem Night Xmas party kicked off to a rousing start. He wacked his signature tribal grooves laced with some electro sounds and sexy vocals, one that came from Murk’s very own Dark Beats (a new remix that I don't know) that had a woman moaning and groaning. The clubbers were lapping it all up. Steve was grinning from the console. Everyone was in the right mood to party the last Saturday of 2003 away. It was great! However, the night really belonged to Oscar G and his stellar set. He came on with a loud cheer from the crowd. He worked the decks brilliantly and maintained his progression of pumping, dark beats intertwined with soulful vocals well. He played around with the vocals of Green Velvet’s La La Land and kept it up just before beginning Donna Summer’s I Feel Loved. A different mix of Everything But The Girl’s old track Missing had pulsating tribal beats to it and Danny Tenaglia’s Be Yourself was a winner with many of us that night. Even Steve was seen grooving with his friends to Oscar’s set. He dropped the very much anticipated Dark Beats and had us shouting “coz’ I’m addicted to drums and I’m a slave to the dark beats” over and over again. The infectious melodies and throbbing sounds carried on throughout his set. He finally ended it with a classic reggae tune from Bob Marley and The Wailers – Could You Be Loved. Fantastic! It had us swaying and singing along. I really enjoyed the night. I was just sorry I didn’t get to hear Fired Up being played.
