- Lars Dales and Maarten Smeets, AKA Detroit Swindle, are house music nerds. While their controversial moniker nods towards their love of Detroit, their sound reflects their love of many eras and styles. Their latest EP, Flavourism, is an appetizer to their upcoming second full-length, and continues their exploration of classicist house. It revolves around a collaboration with the Houston-via-LA producer and vocalist Seven Davis Jr., an artist who also injects raw tones into classic, soulful house. Led by a rubbery, live-sounding bassline, Prophet pads and flavour-themed lyrics, the single is a pleasant (albeit slightly corny) tune that warm-up DJs would be wise to have in their crates.
Dales and Smeets invite the US duo John Barera & Will Martin, two fellow house nerds, for an inventive remix that chops up the vocal into a basic mantra. Pépé Bradock provides the filter-heavy "Bittersweet Mix" and a deconstructed a capella to round out the EP with two weird, imaginative options.
