- Andy Butler and Second Storey remix three Hercules & Love Affair classics.
- In the late '00s, a disco resurgence swept the electronic music scene. Around this time, the New York-based musician Andy Butler was just beginning to put his dance music project, Hercules & Love Affair, into gear. Following the widespread success of his inaugural single, "Blind," his collective would go on to produce some of the disco resurgence's grooviest tunes, opening up the sound to a larger audience. While the nu-disco that championed the dance floors of the '00s might not enjoy the same following today, Butler's taut, soulful production still entrances his faithful listeners. Featuring self-aware, sensual lyrics that can dip into melancholy or even political themes, Butler produces music to make you feel something in the club.
On his new EP, Change, he teams up with Second Storey to remix three Hercules & Love Affair essentials. But this time, there's a house twist. There's a bass-heavy remake of 2018's discomforting "Raise Me Up," amassing serious energy with twinkling synths and echoing, stuttering vocals. Then there's another star cut, "Change." The only completely new track on the EP, its vocal is a simple yet haunting monologue on the inevitability of change in a relationship. But where the original "Are You Still Certain?" teemed with emotion, the "Hercules 2019" remix and its bleeping synths feel sterile. Fortunately, the rest of the EP holds up to par with Butler's catalog. He's progressively tweaking his sound, yet it doesn't lose the soul that grounds his best music.
