  • Though both the artwork and video for "Puppy" feature an adorable retriever, the title refers to a pet name that Doss's ex used to call her. If all you remember is her 2014 breakout hit "The Way I Feel"—also one of the last tracks she released before now—you might be surprised at the melancholy of "Puppy," which sublimates the bliss and excitement of past work into something more tender and vulnerable. The shiny baubles of synth and donk-worthy basslines are still there, but there's a breakbeat underpinning it and vocals that gently waft. Comparisons to Opus III's "It's A Fine Day" are inevitable, but Doss has developed her own musical language in just a few releases, and it sounds just as fresh now as it did five years ago.
