Toasted presents Elliot Eastwick

  • Cruising through the forums I see an advert for the next instalment of Toasted, and it jolts a memory in my head. I remember that I have forgotten to do a review for the previous party almost a month ago. Between university exams and a memory like a sive, the review had just passed me by. So before I begin, just a sincere apology to all those involved with Movin’ House for the lateness of the review. And with that out of the way, we begin… For the first time in Toasted’s short career, they decided to take the gamble of putting on an international as the headliner for there event. The international DJ in question was Elliot Eastwick. While the name seemed familiar, I didn’t really know much about Elliot. I was keen to check out what the man who started his DJing back in the days of the Hacienda had to offer. But before Elliot was set to hit the decks, Jay Walker had the task of warming up for him. This was easily the most impressive set that I have seen Jay Walker play. Never over the top, never too fancy, just a dash of tech, deep and vocal house. Sometimes simple is the order of the day, and in this case it proved perfection. Jay did exactly what a warm up DJ should do, get everyone dancing and set the night up perfectly for the headliner. Before I knew it Elliot was on and there was no mistaking it. His demeanour behind the decks was an interesting sight. Always calm, always with a cigarette in hand and always enjoying himself. Some of Elliot’s mixing was not entirely spot on and sometimes was no more than about 8 bars, but overall he was great. He kept the crowd interested the whole time and mixed it up well, never be predictable. The other set of the night that I had been looking forward to was Cuz’s. This was the last time Cuz would play at a Toasted for a while as he was jetting off overseas. And he went off with a bang. Looking at and listening to Cuz for most of the set, you would have thought he had been mixing for decades. Calm, collected, constantly fiddling with the EQ’s and having a great time. One of the highlights of Cuz’s set was him playing the original of “Sweet Dreams”. This went down a treat with the crowd and really seemed to get everyone going. All in all a great night. Once again the boys and girls at Movin’ House have put on a wonderful evening of aural delights. The risk of putting on Elliot Eastwick turned out to be well worth it, and another international in the future should definitely be on the cards.
