- Like Mark Henning and Den's collaboration last year on Trapez, Cosmic Marmalade is more positive—a little more cheesy, you might say—than a lot of their solo material. Both artists have a propensity towards exacting rhythmic production, though, and this shows. From where I'm standing, there are two killers here in particular: the title cut and "Driving Andromeda." Both centralise the synth lines: sick flex-outs that meander, ebb and flow. The first is a squawking acidic patch, and the second, a deep, futuristic pump. The natural progressions of the harmonies might well be the kind of "cheese" Henning was talking about, but they're really too serious to be defined that way. The other two are more laidback: "Sin City" is brooding and "Canis Major" sun-drenched Detroit, but throughout the EP you have to admire how nicely the tones bounce off each other.
